KSM's Saga of the Returnee returns

Anyone who has seen KSM’s Saga of the Returnee will admit that it is one of his best productions ever. Infact, it can be described as one of KSM’s masterpieces.

The good news is that a reloaded version of The Saga of the Returnee comes back as part of a programme dubbed Touch of Class, an entertainment series which is a collaboration between Sapphire and African Regent Hotel, under the auspices of the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana (CIMG).

It has been labelled entertainment for the discerning audience and a platform for corporate networking and promises to be an evening of enchanting entertainment.

The highlight of the evening will be the Saga of the Returnee. Unlike the regular stand-up comedy routines, this is a full length one-man-play. Although partly autobiographical, KSM plays the fictional character of Kenneth Oduro.

Saga of the Returnee will take guests on a roller coaster of side-splitting laughter as Kenneth narrates his ordeal of 18 years in America and his culture shock when he returns to Ghana. It promises to be totally hilarious and will keep guests at the edge of their seats from start to finish.

KSM plays four main characters in this play in the persons of B. K. Oduro (Kenneth’s father), Maame Docia (Kenneth’s mother), Yaw Oduro (Kenneth’s brother) and Gina (Kenneth’s sister-in-law).

In addition to these main characters, KSM also plays an array of minor characters notably Gary who is an exuberant African-American friend.
Touch of Class comes off on September 30 and October 1 at the African Regent Hotel at 7pm.

Also on the bill is the renowed spoken word artiste, Chief Mommen who is expected to thrill guests with his act as well as a host of others.

“We thought of doing something very different but classy, entertainment that will stay on the minds of Ghanaians for a long time to come and that is how the idea of Touch of Class came about.  It promises to be an evening of enchanting entertainment, “ were the words of KSM.

"I Know The Ballot Box Won't Be Too Tall" - Comedian Lekzy replies Veep

In this period of political tantrums, one is definitely going to be aggrieved by certain comments politicians pass and even comedians are not taking lightly what politicians call a joke.

In a three day campaign tour of the Eastern Region, the Vice President, Amissah-Arthur is claimed to have said short people need to be carried to see Mahama's achievement. This angered Lekzy, who prides himself as the shortest comedian, as he took to social media to express his disgust. In a post he wrote: I know the ballot box won't be too tall for us to cast our vote too. Politics should deal with issues not attacking physical looks of people. It's an insult to me as a concerned short person."

In recent times, the ruling party NDC, have made comments on short people which are aimed at the opposition leader, Akuffo-Addo. According to the comedian, politicians need to mind their language. They need not use such platforms to insult Ghanaians.

Talking to Comedy Empire he said, "I pride myself in being short. But it's offensive for a public official none less than the Vice President of the land and his minister to make mockery of our height cos of politics. So are they saying short people aren't humans? They really owe us an apology."

My Wife In-law Visits Legon

It's one thing to be married and it's another thing to be MARRIED. Either ways there are in-laws to deal with but what if that In-Law is your Wife In-law? Sounds strange huh? That's what happens when you invite a third-party into your marriage and come this Saturday, renowned playwright, Kobby Ansah, brings to you My Wife In-Law.

In a three-cast romantic comedy about a mother-in-law who interferes in her daughter’s marriage and eventually falls in love with her son-in-law, the play is aimed at reminding both single and married, Marriage is for Two not Three.

My Wife In-Law will be staged at the R.S Amegashie Hall, University of Ghana Business School, Legon on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 5pm and 8pm.

This would bring to the collection of Scribe Productions' four plays with previous ones being the world's first seasonal stage play, This Family Is Not For Sale Season 1, a play which sought to convey a message that every family has got issues to deal with and has been loved for his output ever since.

Its sequel, This Family Is Not For Sale 2, highlighted how society wastes resources on funerals while his third production, I Want To Sue God! made mockery of how people literally blame God for choices they make.

The public can find no better way to enjoy the weekend than to see My Wife In-Law at the R. S Amegashie auditorium of the University of Ghana on September 24 at 5pm and 8pm.

Personality File: Time With Lekzy

He is the latest sensation on the comedy scene. He has won the hearts of many celebrities and is said to be the Prince of Comedy. After a marvellous and splendid performance at DKB's Point of View, he's become a hot cake and has graced many stages including the biggest comedy platform, A Night of 1022 Laughs and Music. He's been on the big screens in recent times and Comedy Empire has been fortunate to get an interview with him despite his busy schedules. Our host, Nii Bavard, caught up with him at the just ended Laughline Comedy show and they had a journey through the life of Lekzy; his personal, relationship and celebrity life. Enjoy the chit-chat.

Nii Bavard: Lekzy, nice meeting you again.

Lekzy: Thank you Nii.

Nii Bavard: So give us a brief introduction, Who is Lekzy?

Lekzy: Lekzy is me,myself and I. I Born into a family of 5 and a proud first born. A graduate of Takoradi Poly and also a proud product of Koforidua Secondary and Technical School.

Nii Bavard: So who is actually Lekzy? What's your real name?

Lekzy: Nana Kwame Nkansah Emmanuel Ansong is what my parents gave me without my opinion. Dictatorship is an African thing you know 😂😂😂

Nii Bavard✍🏾: So as a rebel leader, why did you choose Lekzy?

Lekzy: It's an abbreviation. It stands for L-earned,  E-xceptional K-nowledgeable  Z-Zealous and Y for any word you deem fit for me.......some say I'm yummy others say I'm young but I think I'm just like the mysterious Y in algebra.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: So what were your institutions of tutelage as far as education is concerned?

Lekzy: Ok. Just as i said early on I had my primary and junior high education at St. Mark's Methodist Preparatory School and later to Koforidua Sectech and finally to Takoradi Polytechnic where I offered Graphic Designing. I still don't understand why Mahama waited for me to leave before making it a University......I just can't reach my mind back.

Nii Bavard✍: Haha........... So professionally you're a graphic designer. Why do you choose comedy?

Lekzy: Yes......I'm actually a graphic designer by profession  but funny enough comedy has chosen and I've appointed it to be my career of which it's taking a greater chunk of my time now. You can imagine how I appointed it. But on a much serious note,  Its my way of life.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: Is it innate? Anyone in your family who is a comedian?

Lexy: Not at all. My dad just has a great sense of humour not a comedian.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: Ok. So it's a family thing....it runs in the family I guess.

Lekzy: Naa.........I'm a limited breed

Nii Bavard✍🏾: Haha....interesting. What breed are you? German shepherd or Sokoto Red?

Lekzy: Is this where the interview is diverting to? I won't react, at the right time.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: So how did it feel like when you started doing comedy. What was the family reaction?

Lekzy: Fortunately for me I found myself in a "follow your passion" family with just one caution: "Dont tarnish the family's name in whatever you do."

Nii Bavard✍🏾: Wow.......that's quite encouraging by the family. So initially, they weren't concerned like most African parents would be?

Lekzy: Not at all.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: You such a fortunate dude. So how was your first performance?

Lekzy: Awesome. Actually I've not really really had a bad day. Average days but not bad as bad since.

Nii Bavard✍: Can you recall that one event you felt within you that you've flopped?

Lekzy: Early this year at Comedy Express. I just went blank on stage. Actually I was not in the right frame of mind then but notwithstanding, I had my response but not as loud as the usual me.

Nii Bavard✍: I guess it's normal. The peak and troughs of art. So what keeps you going? Where do you derive motivation?

Lekzy: I can't tell what keeps me going... it could be passion driven. The interesting part about it is, I only feel good when I'm with the microphone.

Nii Bavard✍: Have there been moments where you felt you'd be sacked from stage?

Lekzy: yeah and I didn't perform at all because one of the big guys in comedy now was hooted at from stage and I was performing right after him. That was at Takoradi poly.

Nii Bavard✍: No vim for Lekzy. Despite the down moments, what has been your proudest moment as a comedian.

Lekzy: I have a lot of proud moments but the one to stay in my memory books would be when I shared the stage with Preye of Ebezina fame from Nigeria came to Ghana in December last year.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: So let's get to the big moment: Point of View

Lekzy: Yeeess. Finally.... I was waiting for this? Why you take put last?

Nii Bavard✍: Next time it would be after the interview. How was POV to you?

Lekzy: That wasn't my first performance at the theatre but this was different cos we as a comedy fraternity wanted to make a statement which I think we did. It was DKB's show but it was my world cup.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: 😂😂😂😂😂. How did you feel when you had an ovation?

Lekzy: I've had it a couple of times in my career but this one was one that got me flying without wings. Chale, To see celebrities stand up......Mheeern!!!!! After that show,I was blessed with two more ovations, Classics and Comedy and A Night of 1022 Laughs and Music.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: Saw Lexis Billz post and it confirms it. So can we say it was your greatest moment?

 Lekzy: Let's say so

Nii Bavard✍🏾: Lol........Who has been your role model?

Lekzy: Kevin Hart. In Ghana, Foster Romanus

Nii Bavard✍🏾: Why Kevin Hart, height factors?

Lekzy: Nope far from that....... Their energy on stage and content kind of connect with me. DKB gave me enough reasons to do comedy.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: The comedy industry over the years has been budding and people are still pessimistic about the industry. As an industry player, what are your challenges with the industry?

Lekzy: Lack of Opportunities and finances especially when it's about sponsorship. People look down on me cos they think my stature doesn't depict what I say or can do. The income from comedy isn't de best for now but we are growing so very soon.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: If the comedy industry does not really pay, would you choose your career over your profession at any time?

Lekzy: oh yeah. Everyday, Anyway, Everything, Anytime

Nii Bavard✍🏾: Passion over money I guess.

Lekzy: Exactly

Nii Bavard✍🏾: So if given the chance to change something in the industry what would it be?

Lekzy: Wow. Change the mindset of event organizers. We need equal share of the arts cake as the musicians.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: Do you see a future beyond comedy?

Lekzy: Far beyond future. Its here ,I'm here and we both here to stay.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: If God gave you the chance to choose, who do you wish to be on stage with one-day?

Lekzy: Kevin Hart

Nii Bavard✍🏾: You really like him

Lekzy: I don't like him. I see myself in him.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: Who's your favourite African Act?

Lekzy: Trevor Noah and Bovi

Nii Bavard: Tell us about your feature in the upcoming stage play, TROTRO, how did you get into it and the role you'd play.

Lekzy: I spoke to Clemento Suarez about my interest in acting and he said OK he will lobby to get me a role. Lo and behold I get to be in it and I'm playing the role of a stubborn passenger in a car who just minds his business cos he doesn't want to pay his fare.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: any interest aside comedy?

Lekzy: I love education. I also love to rap. I used to rap way back in school which I think I might visit that side of me too very soon but now I think I would want to establish a school someday.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: Haha.......rap. That would look like Hilarious Rap.

Lekzy: I actually did real rap. I was in a group called BACK PAGE. In 2008, we won the best high school music group at the X'mas Fiesta.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: Wow. Your achievements look taller than you. As a rapper, who do you think is the best rapper in Ghana now?

 Lekzy: Sarkodie

Nii Bavard✍🏾: Why Obidi?

Lekzy: I love achievers. People who push their craft till they attain greatness.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: This is old but what's your Point of View on the Sark-Fest Beef?

Lekzy: Anything Sark. No long talk.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: So final question........The Bible says it's not good for man to be alone and as you already know, Romanus has tied the knot, DKB is also in the pipeline..........Lekzy do you have a special future Missus?

Lekzy: Not yet

Nii Bavard✍🏾: Is it that they're not coming or they don't like you?

Lekzy: They come but  I'm not ready for now. I can't afford love now. It's just too expensive.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: How do you separate your personal life from your public life?

Lekzy: Wish I had a clue to that. All I know is I just seperate the two.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: That's interesting. So your final words to upcoming comedians like KSM and Bill Cosby who look up to you.

Lekzy: They are the pilot of their own dreams so they should let no one direct or cut out their part for them. When you give up on your dream ,you lose them not.

Nii Bavard✍🏾: Thanks Lekzy........Comedy Empire is grateful for your time. We wish you the very best in your career.

Lekzy: You're welcome. Thanks for hosting me too.

Kumchacha Must Be A Kamasutra Master - Khemikal

The past week has been fun on social media as interesting videos have been making the news. Aside the trending Ewurama video which has raised a lot of eyebrows is an interview by popular pastor Kumchacha.

In the video, the acclaimed man of God, is seen to be talking about how to satisfy a man in bed and the how to get gifts from men after a good work done in bed. Daniel Selase, known by stage name Khemikal, has expressed concerns to the issue in an interview with Comedy Empire. The Prince of Primetime Comedy said, "Personally I like him cos he's real. He is frank and does not mince his words. I love his sense of humor and how he compares stuff like how he compared someone's butts to the heaviness of Libya coconut. I mean we got such great talent being wasted in the pastoral field? He should be something either than a pastor. Maybe a comedian or a kamasutra instructor."

"I mean as a man of God, you can't openly be discussing this and telling us what you do in the bedroom with your spouse. But I like one thing about him; he errs with much confidence that he didn't realise when he said his wife is a business. On a much serious note, social media keeps promoting nonsense. I think he did speak the wrong way in general. From his interview, the man is encouraging fornication and prostitution among the youth and that brings to bare the function of the Christian Council and is role checking the behaviour of such acclaimed men of God.", He added.

Laughline Shuts Down Accra Mall

Like it or not, Comedy is completely taking over and Ghanaians are in love with the industry. This couldn't have been better demonstrated than the influx of patrons last Saturday at the Silver Bird Cinema at Laughline. You could call it the Total Shut Down as most people with nothing to do at the mall after a hangout trooped in to have a feel of Comedy brewed in Ghana.

The monthly comedy show which premiered on Saturday saw a fully packed auditorium with people standing and others who didn't mind sitting on the stairs just to have a good laugh. The event which was well patronized saw patrons being served with sterling performances back to back with no breathing space. The host, Augustin Dennis, held down the show from the beginning and in between acts just to keep the fire kindled. He proved why he was the host for its premier edition.

Augustin Dennis

That night saw performances from Pious, Khemikal, Lekzy, Romanus, Jacinta, OB, Pararan and Tee Kay. Chied Fred was also there to bless the mic with poetry. Patrons were treated to a karaoke session which was led by Augustin Dennis.  In attendance were Giovanni Caleb, host of Starr Drive and Ghana's finest comic actor, Clemento Suarez. The event was organised by Kasa Entertainment with support from Event Guide and True Talk Gh.

'We're Back' - Comedian OB, others rock Laughline

It's true the fall of a man is not the end of the world and Comedian OB proved that saying last weekend at the premier edition of Laughline at the Silver Bird Cinema. In what many would have seen to be the end of his comedy career, OB, last month on Facebook chastised himself for an unsatisfactory performance at the Night of 1022 Laughs and Music. However, over the weekend, he proved critics wrong as he got the whole theatre giving him a standing ovation at the end of his performance.

He ended his performance confidently saying "My name is OB, and I'm back." Speaking to Comedy Empire, optometrist cum comedian after the show said, "Yes we're back and I'm very elated tonight. My performance at the 1022 Laughs and Music was not really up to expectations. I had to go back to the drawing board, restrategise and come back and I believe it's been here for all of us to see that OB is back. Standup Comedy is an art and every art comes with highs and lows. If I thank God for Highs, I should thank Him for lows too so I'm grateful to God for an important lesson learnt on the night. To get a good jump, you need to get a pretty good squat. I'm still learning, it's a long and rocky journey, but with Christ, we shall not disappoint."

The weekend at the Silver Bird Cinema was filled with laughter as audience were thrilled with back to back performances from the crème de la crème of Ghanaian comedians at Laughline. The event hosted by Kasa Entertainment is a monthly show and would see new and old faces in the comedy industry coming together each month to thrill Ghanaians. Laughline is here to stay.

I Got Ghana 3 Eclipses - Mahama

In what seems to be a silencer to critics, the president, His Excellency President Mahama has updated the Green Book by adding three great phenomena to it.

This was in response to allegations by the opposition and some critics on social media that he's not been able to give a full eclipse like Prez. Kuffuor did in his time. Speaking to our news team,His Excellency reiterated his stance on the short memory of Ghanaians. He said, "I'm marvelled by these allegations. I really am." He further added, "in 2013 on a Sunday,I have one partial solar eclipse, just this morning I gave another one. My brother,  in fraction or maths, if you have two halves of oranges and put together, isn't it one? So if I've I've given two partial eclipses, isn't it one full solar eclipse?"

The president who who couldn't hide his disappointment said, "so even if I didn't give a full solar eclipse, you didn't also see I gave a full lunar eclipse? You people are not observant and you get up accusing me that I'm incompetent. What do you mean? I got Ghana 3 eclipses in 3 Years."

This has sparked controversies in the camp of the opposition since they claim they didn't see the eclipse this morning. However, the CPP has said they saw the eclipse since the cock on their flag was able to signal them to wake up.

Comedy Empire would bring you all the news surrounding this debate as they unfold. Watch this space for more stories.

Laughter is Life, Laughline is Oxygen - Khemikal

Come this Saturday, 3rd September at the Silverbird Lounge, the face of Ghana Comedy would undergo a revolution as Kasa Entertainment brings to Ghanaians a monthly comedy show dubbed Laughline.

In what seems to be the definition of a packed event, the premier edition would see all of Ghana's comedy royal family on one stage and the Prince of Primetime, Khemikal, is not going to be left out. Catching up with him at his residence, Daniel Selase known by stage name Khemikal, was preparing towards Saturday's show and could not hide his excitement. He said, "This is not a stage to joke with despite being on bigger stages in the past few months. It is my responsibility as the only Khemikal in the lab to cause a chemical laughter on Saturday. Laughter is Life, Laughline is Oxygen so he who doesn't laugh is surely dead."

Khemikal on that night would be performing alongside fellow humour therapists; Pararan, Jacinta, Lekzy, Romanus, Id James Brown, DKB, Tee Kay, OB, Nino and Augustin Dennis who would be the host for the night. There'll also be karaoke, poetry and musical performances for all art lovers.
